Are you thinking about adding film to your session or wedding package? Do you love the nostalgic and candid vibe of 35mm film? Film captures moments in an entirely different way, it helps your documented moments feel lived in, it helps you remember the FEELING of your day. Film has a tendency to be perfectly imperfect, sometimes unpredictable, and sometimes out of focus but with no loss of understanding of the fleeting emotions felt in the moment. My journey with film started like most photographers - in a high school dark room learning how to mix chemicals and process our own film. Fast forward to today & some of my work is still created on the cameras I used back in high school. Film requires a level of slowness & intentionality with only 36 shots on a 35mm roll and up to 16 on 120 film. There is a timeless and nostalgic quality to film that can’t be replicated on digital cameras.
One of my favorite film cameras also has a special story attached. One day while going through closets at my grandparent’s farm I found an old film camera that I recognized from growing up - I remembered seeing it at family holidays and piling onto the couch with my cousins for a photo. I realized that there was still a roll of film inside & decided to finish out the roll and develop it on the off chance the film hadn’t been damaged after years sitting in a closet. When I received the film scans I was shocked to see photos of my grandparents farm & a photo of my Grandpa from nearly 20 years ago when he was the Grand Marshal of the VFW 4th of July parade. This photo that had been sitting on a roll of film in the back of a closet for years has now become one of the most special gifts photography has given me. This slightly blurry photo of my Grandpa so proud & smiling is exactly how I remember him. Captured forever on a 35mm film on a little point and shoot camera that I still use from time to time today to document the stories of my couples.
